The Research On The Academic Libraries' IC Mode Construction

Since the beginning of 1990's, a new type service mode developing in United States library circles is named as the Information Commons (ab. IC). Its appearance is accompanyied the developing of computer technology, multimedia technology, network technology, modern communication technology, and the reforming of teaching, and the changing of people's learning style and the information acceptance way. IC's emerge as the times require, it provide brand-new space and platform for people creating and sharing information resource, producing production, communicating study outcomes. At the same time, it makes people coming into the library and extending library's service possible.Information Commons, is not only a pratice problem but also a brand-new theory study problem in library science and informatics circles. The building of IC not provide more abundant resource and more conveniente and faster study circumstance for consumers, but a way of promote library service deepness and extent. While, IC can perfect the management and service function of library as well as improve the sharing of infor resource and promote service performance. All of the above, it has important reality meaning and well application furture.The author started with the IC's theory study and practice progress of nearly ten years, analysed the domestic and overseas IC study actuality systematically, gave the integration comments. During over 10 years developing, overseas IC theory study has many deferent definitions, although the descriptions are deferent, the service conception are almost close, that is conforming and sharing information resource, technology and service. Domestic IC theory study theses later compared with overseas, the first thesis was published in 2005, has fewer relevant study results. In practice aspect, overseas academic library and public library, even private institute library established IC in diferent size and form, and win the welcome. Not many domestic library built the IC, several academic library established IC at present, otherwise, few universties have the schemes of IC. The summarize of this part provide the basic for the following study.According relevant study results, author introduced the definition, character, virtue and composing elements in details. She also illustrated the three phase of IC service mode evolution, through the analyses of these evolution phase and the sum up of IC's composing elements, author has got sufficiency theory foundation for forward thesis study.For the purpose of make clear main contents of IC construction, complete our country's IC establishment plan, the author researched 35 academic libraries'IC progress in domestic and overseas, including 21 American universities, 2 British universities, 1 Canada university, 1 New Zealand university, and 10 domestic universities. The author takes the David B. Weigle Information Commons of University of Pennsylvania, Richard J. Klarchek Information Commons in Loyola University Chicago, The Information Commons in University of Sheffield, Chinese University of Hongkong, Shanghai Normal University as cases, presenting the introduction of them. Further more, the author compare these IC cases from space, resource, and service aspects. Through plenary research, this paper gain plentiful real materials for our country's IC mode construction, it also provide valued reference information for those people who study IC theory and practice in the future as well as for the libraries.This paper describe IC construction way and main content bothly. In IC's substantial space, there are two ways of establish academic research library, one is that library establish IC space at present area, joining IC conception, replaning library's area, combining library and relative departments. The other way is that library build a new building with considering IC's function. IC's construction main content conclude space, resource and service.Therefore, integrating overseas IC construction experience and domestic characteristic, the author design a plan of our country library IC construction, present the idea of'focus on the user'as our country library IC key conception, give the target and mission of IC, separately explain the design plan in four ways as follow, physical space design and dummy space design, people design and run system.As IC is a integrative dynamic service mode gathering information resource and all kinds of hardware and software, is easy to build, but difficult to run. IC facing a series problem waiting to be solve, such as this paper has mentioned, substantial space plan, equipments and conditions problems, service function conformity, service policy establishment problems, staff arrangement, trying for more cooperation, service management and evaluation, fund and open time etc., all of the above mentioned problem is the difficults need to be solve. While, the biggest challenge of construct academic library IC is how to promote IC work staff cooperation, build a common study, equally opening harmonious circumstance, how to team up experts and librarians with different culture background, strengthen the sciential share and communion, provide more fast and correct resource etc. problems. The author offer the countermeasure analysis for the above problems.IC as a result of library resource and service function integration, it provide a kind of persist service of plan study to final production for user, is a innovation of library service mode. It's also has good use for reference meaning to our country library continuable development and service innovation.The IC study of this paper is a systemic comprehensive summarize for IC theory, give the example for IC construction, try to design our country library IC mode construction blueprint, bring the relevant countermeasure for the problem will be met in the future.
