With the rapid development of embedded system and streaming media technology, the multimedia applications based on embedded system such as video phone, video on demand and real-time video conference have become a hot-spot research field. Such systems are usually featured by its small size, low power, low cost, reliability, portability, etc.This dissertation aims to study the relevant technologies about streaming media and embedded system, and based on ARM9 processor to realize an embedded streaming media player. The hardware platform of the player is planned based on the 32-bit high-performance ARM9 processor, and technologies including embedded Linux, MPEG-4 video decompression and streaming media protocols are employed to design the player.The main contributions of the dissertation are listed below:1,The functions and technical features of embedded streaming media players are analyzed, and the architecture of the player is designed.2,Based on the study of embedded Linux system, an ARM-based Linux system is built. The building job has three steps, that is, the transplantation of BootLoader, the configuration and compilation of Linux kernel and the establishment of embedded root file-system.3,Based on the study of MPEG-4 video compression standard, a MPEG-4 decoder is transplanted on the ARM-Linux system.4,The software optimization methods based on the ARM architecture are studied, using these platform-based optimizing methods, the MPEG-4 decoder is optimized.5,The error concealment technology in video communication is studied. Aiming at the limitation of classical boundary matching algorithm for temporal error concealment, a new boundary matching algorithm based on both the spatial and temporal smoothness is presented.6,The protocols used to transport multimedia stream are studied , and a basic real-time transportation system for MPEG-4 video is realized.
