With the development of the Internet Technologies, there are more and more users. And a lot of multimedia business and new business have emerged, such as video-on-demand, video conference, distance learning and so on. So the traditional point-to-point Unicast because of its serious bandwidth waste and inefficiency can no longer accommodate these requirements. People then put forward the concept of multicast. Multicast is a new communication method which sends one packet form one node to multi-point.IP Multicast increases the system cost and complexity of routing, and it also has a lot of defects about charge system. So all the researchers around the world have tried to bypass the various problems of IP Multicast, and they propose a new multicast protocol based on application layer. In this protocol, we work on application layer and on longer rely on the network layer and the routing. This method does not require any change about network framework, so it's a totally new way to carry out large-scale multicast applications. The basic idea about application layer multicast is to underlie the detail about the framework of physical network. And group members will become a logical self-organize network system, and provide service in the application layer to maintain the system.
