With the development of Internet and computer science and technology, the customers and their application changes accordingly. The customers don't satisfy email and web exploring only. New applications such as multimedia conferences, large-scale group communication, content distribution grows faster and faster. These applications have the communication model of one-to-many or many-to-many. The traditional IP multicast architecture was proposed for these communication models. However, more than a decade after its initial proposal, deployment of IP multicast has been limited due to a variety of technical and market reasons. Under this condition, IP multicast architecture can't satisfy customers and their application. Researchers in the recent past have proposed application layer multicast as an alternate technique for provide multicast services. The basic idea of application layer multicast is to implement the multicasting functionality at the application layer independent of the support of multicasting functionality in network layer. That means, application layer multicast takes advantages of network resources available at the edge of Internet instead of the core of Internet. This paper emphasizes on the research of application layer multicast based on Peer-to-Peer network. Based on Peer-to-Peer network, the author proposes a three-tiered application layer multicast architecture. The author also implements the related prototype. The main contents of work includes the following parts:Firstly, we analyzed the current development of application layer multicast; proposed the abstraction model of application layer multicast and its related routing problems and summarized the current routing algorithmsSecondly, we researched the current application layer multicast based on Peer-to-Peer network, including CAN Multicast, Bayeux, Scribe etc. We analyzed their advantages and shortage. Then, we proposed our application layer multicast architecture. It consists of three layers: Peer-to-Peer network abstraction layer, multicasting service layer and multicasting application layer. The Peer-to-Peer network abstraction layer provides a generic interface of Peer-to-Peer lookup service. The multicasting service provides multicasting functionality. The multicasting application layer represents the user's application. The research work in my paper is affiliated with the national science foundation project "Research on the Next Generation Network Service Architecture and its Key Technology".
