3D-reconstruction is a method of building logical 3D surface from sample data of object surface, applied to build a surface model. It, which is the base of visual reality and scientific visibility, is widely used to measurement and observation.A great number of information are included in reflected light, and can be used to provide sample data for reconstruction of object surface. The shape of surface and reflection characteristic can be acquired by analyzing polarization distribution of reflected light from object surface. Reconstruction study of surface based on polarization of reflected light has not appeared in newspaper in our country so far. Moreover, that is emphasized particularly on transparent object and metal. The surface reconstruction study, based on polarization analysis of reflected light, of smooth opaque dielectric is firstly proposed. The function relationship between degree of polarization (DOP) and surface normal of smooth opaque dielectric is derived from Fresnel reflectance contrasting with the reflectance model of metal surface. Reconstruction of measured surface is acquired by applying this function relationship to processing the polarized gray-scale maps measured by CCD. The practicality and effectivity of this reconstruction method are proved. Furthermore, this method has the merits of simplicity, little processing data, low cost, and can be in several fields. The achievements of this paper are helpful to new non-contact optoelectronic test technology, which is applied to measure the surface shape and reflectance characteristics.
