With the development of social information, especially the development of multimedia technology, the request of the bit rate become higher and higher. In 40Gand above optical communication system, PMD is the key factor that limits the accumulation of bit rate and distant. Researchers have do lots of research on PMD and PMD compensation technology, since 80s last century. By now, there are many compensation technologies, but the compensation system can not fit the request of commercial using.Depend on the research of National 863 High Technology Projects of China: "Self Adaptive Compensation Technology of Fiber PMD". First, paper sums all PMD compensation technologies up. Second, we do a lot of work on global optimal arithmetic and trace arithmetic. Study if Direct Arithmetic can find the global optimum control parameters, and compare the DOP at the optimum control parameters (find by Direct Arithmetic) to optimum DOP. The results demonstrate that Direct Arithmetic can find the global optimum control parameters quickly and correctly, and can avoid compensation arithmetic get into local optimization. Then we did some improvement on Trace Arithmetic, and tested Direct Arithmetic and Improved Trace Arithmetic on 8×10Gbit/s 400 Km DWDM PMD compensation systems and 40G transmission systems. The testing results all show the improvement on eye pattern. The stat. experience validate Improved Trace Arithmetic can compensate the PMD fluctuate in 1ms. Last, we sum the limitations of the PMD compensation system up, and show the direction of improvement.
