With the development of optical fiber communication, in which the bit rate and capacity have been increasing rapidly in these years, the effects of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) become more and more important and cannot be ignored when the transmission is up to 10Gbit/s or above. Research found that PMD can damage the performance of system and limit the transmission bit-rate and length of system. However, it is very difficult to compensate the PMD effect because of its stochastic feature. The impact of PMD on high-speed data transmission and the key technologies of PMD compensation are the focus of optical fiber communication system in the world. The basic of content about research PMD includes the fundamental theory, the measurement ways, the PMD emulator and the means of compensation.Firstly, a summary of the principle of PMD and its statistics nature was given in this paper, which include its concept, description, statistics nature, impact on communication system and measurement ways. Because of statistics nature of PMD, it is necessary to design a PMD emulator in our research. So in the following we analyze the principal state polarization (PSP) of PMD and study the statistical characteristics of the first and second order PMD of a PMD emulator based on the Jones matrix of optical fiber and Monte Carlo method. The simulation results will be helpful for PMD emulator design. The next, we gave a summary analysis and comparison of present main PMD compensation or mitigation methods; then we discussed several compensation methods in WDM system and put forward a compensation method based on worst channel compensation.
