With the rapid development of the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), the pure voice service was already unable to satisfy the user and the market demand. Therefore, a kind of VoIP plan service that IP media server was brought. It can provide the personalization and the different Value-added service, moreover may bring a higher profit for the provider. The overseas IP media server has been massively applied to practice. Also the domestic has launched this research and development.The IP media server is independent equipment that provides the multimedia resources function in the NGN (Next Generation Network) multimedia service platform. In the NGN environment, it already may work under the soft commutation equipment control, also may work under the application server control, which provide service for each kind of media operation using the opening the API. It mainly relates to SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) of the media control protocol, RTP/RTCP(Real-time Transport Protocol / RTP Control Protocol) of media transport protocols, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)protocol and so on. And some key technologies were applied by this equipment, such as soft switch technology, XML language and signal processing.This paper mainly researches the design and implementation of a media server. The traditional media server has much weakness, for example they only can process PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), which capability of communication is feebleness, can not provide simplex voice operation and not easy to manage the communicate route and so on. In view of these weaknesses, this topic has developed this kind of new media server system. Not only this new system can suffice many kinds of needs, but also can provide many kinds of functions, such as IVR (Interactive Voice Response), conference, IP voice and fax, distributional calling center and so on.This paper analyzed the status quo of the domestic media server, and also learns from the other systems strengths, and put forward a new media server system named Imedia. The Imedia server is a system that is provided with a third party for media processing card, using C++ language design and development in Linux platform. It is an open and scalable media server system. A modular design was used in the process of the realization of the system for making it easy to design, development and management. Because the Imedia server system has used the calling of centralized processing and the resources distributional processing design proposal, therefore the system has the good flexibility, the reliability and openness. The system is low-cost of development and use. It also has many excellences such as prominent performance, powerful function and good expansibility. Different users can make use of the advantages of different functions. As an important component of the network in the next generation, IP media server will promote new value-added business development.
