Rapid tooling (RT) has become a key technology in the design and development of new products for its low manufacturing cost and rapid response to the market demand. As for its few limits of the complex pattern's size and spraying materials and high formation quality, rapid plasma spray tooling (RPST) has received widespread attention.The work environment is very bad during the rapid plasma spray tooling. Generally, limited by the environment and speed of the measurement, contacted measurement method is not suited if the part's profile want to be measured during the manufacturing. As one of the non-contact measurement method, the phase-approaching method of projected prating has the characteristics of large measurement area, high speed and simple system configuration.In this paper, it is introduced into the rapid plasma spray tooling, and the main purpose is to develop real time measuring and control system provided that the certain precision of the method is kept, thus to control the growth of the coating and improve its quality.In this paper, the principle of modulation and demodulation of the phase- approaching method of projected prating is addressed in detail, and the relationship between the figure of part and the corresponding phase is introduced. The Fourier Transform Profilometry is expatiated particularly, and its arithmetic has been deducted integrally, and the feasibility of FTP is been proved by simulation and instance.In the paper, different frameworks of the measurement system have been researched, and find a uniform formula used to calculate height. So the system adjustment before measurement turn to easy, and a systemic demarcate technique is created.The measurement result based on the method is presented at the end; the result is groundwork to the 3-D part profile measurement during rapid plasma spray tooling. The experimental results based on the method are given at the end, and also the error sources and improvement methods are brought forward.The result shows that, the phase-approaching method can be used in the 3-D profile measurement of rapid plasma spray tooling.
