In this paper, research and design of RFID tag antenna are carried out using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm. From 2003, the RFID technology is becoming one of the most important hot technology.Advantages of using FDTD algorithm and the characteristics of tag antenna designed in this paper are introduced at first. Then, fundamental principle of RFID system, system components of RFID, application of RFID system, choosing of working frequency for RFID and the challenges faced by RFID are introduced. The gap at researching and manufacturing of RFID between china and developed countries is discussed. Miniaturization of microstrip antenna and some methods adopted in order to inhance bandwidth of microstrip antenna are also introduced. In the paper, the author designs a square patch antenna. The radiation Characteristics of the designed patch antenna is analyzed using FDTD algorithm at two different situations: patch with C-slot and patch with no slot. Etching slot on microstrip patch antenna can reduce the size and enhance the bandwidth of the antenna is validated from the radiation characteristics of the designed antenna at two different situations.Far distance electronic tags on 902~928MHz of UHF spectrum are the emphases of currently research, and one of the biggest challenges in RFID antenna design is tagging objects that consist of metal material. A series of requirements that must be met when designing a tag antenna working at UHF spectrum are proposed according to a large number of literatures. Through simulation and optimization of a model in a literature, the paper presents a new design of a RFID tag antenna attaching on metal objects, the design of L-shaped and U-shaped slotted Planar Inverted-F Antenna(PIFA) of passive RFID antenna works at 902~928MHz. The new tag antenna has the characteristics of smaller volume and wider bandwidth, and tagging objects can consist of metal. The design satisfies the requirements of UHF RFID antennas.
