Data Warehouse Based Decision Support System For Military Map Management

Along with the rapid development in the military defense system, deploying information infrastructure is becoming a key issue. As the information delivered over the battlefield tends to change faster and contain more variety, a quickly decision made by commanders based on efficient data collecting will greatly affect the deployment and operations of army. Therefore, it is necessary to implement a decision support system in decision making.Decision support technique is mainly based on the Data Warehouse and On-Line Analysis Processing (OLAP) techniques. Data warehouse is a subject-oriented, integrated data aggregation, which is responsible for preparing useful data for decision makers. These data will then be analyzed using OLAP from various aspects and finally generate a public diagram for commanders.This paper aims at solving the urgent requirements of military industry, which discusses the architecture and model of data warehouse-based decision support system. On the basis of analyzing the technical characters, the components and the architecture of decision support system in data warehouse, a military map management decision support system based on C/S architecture is established and implemented. With the help of data warehouse, data saved in different period can be collected. This collection is followed by a data analysis operation. Through analyze data from different point of view, OLAP could provide sufficient information for commanders on military map requirements and region strategic analysis.This system is currently being tested at military mapping department. Decision makers can use this analysis system to grab important data, such as unit requirements, map requirements and region strategy level. Moreover, a more precise military mapping scheme and leveraging the important of region strategy are all based on the analyzed data.In general, data warehouse based military decision support system replaces the traditional decision making method which is mainly depend on experience. Through using data aided decision making system, the percentage of correct decision increase obviously. Therefore, this system can provide strongly support for successful military developing strategy. It is also a decision point of whether to make a further step on constructing more complex data warehouse and decision support system.
