In western countries, the publishing industries have mature markets. As a category of broking, literary agents and their business have been standardized and become very mature. They have played an important role as middleman in modern publishing industries and been appreciated by more publisher and authors. Authors, literary agents, publisher, distributors and bookstalls have formed a new publishing network that has involved writing, printing and distribution.In China, with deepening of China's reform on economic structure and boom of book market and broking, literary agents emerge as a new industry within more than ten years. Some institutions with literary agent characters such as literary studio, literary company and copyright deputy company have played important part on China's publishing industry. Gradually, literary agents have developed out of and distinguished itself from broking.Although literary agents have developed so rapidly, there exist some doubts and even some disputes from academia and publishing industry on whether there is a need to develop literary agents. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the need of developing literary agents on the base of China context. If it is needed, what situation has it existed in and what advantages and disadvantages does it have? In this thesis, necessity of China's literary agents has been analyzed through comparison and research on between western publishing industry and China's publishing industry. Based on this analysis, some future development patterns have put forth with the aim to give some thoughts to China's publishing development.
