Along with the development of modern information technology network education is produced as a new education form. Most network teaching systems lack intelligence, self-adaptation, autonomy and intercommunication and alternation between each link, agent technique could be used to improve it and make research on these drawbacks.Using agent technique can make teaching more interesting and humanizing and improve teaching. It could be used to manage the information of learners and their learning behavior can be tracked dynamically so that more reliable basis is provided for establishment of student models. Its sociality could meet the requirement of constructivism for studying in coordination. Each learner is an agent and the studying could be carried out in coordination through the coordinating function between each learner. A teacher could also be considered as an agent and can exchange information with a student and know his studying situation. The intelligence and initiative of teaching is fully embodied if the overall requirement and solution of network education system are based on the analysis of agent idea. Especially for the embedded artificial intelligence and agent technique based on web technology, they are much better than traditional network education system in teaching achievement, teaching mode, and system performance so that they can promote the implementation of teaching reform and quality education very much. Network education could have a big change in both of form and content on the future Internet. It could have more intercommunication, autonomy and self-adaptation.Based on the present situation of network education, this paper analyzes the necessity of adoption of teaching agent. The paper also analyzes its applications in network education systems. Taking a web course " The basic application of computer " as an example, the paper introduces the overall construction, each function model and its design of teaching agent. Based on the functions of original network education systems, three model designs are given in the paper, that is, Student agent; Teacher agent, Mobile agent. This paper is focusing on the research of the teaching agent for student end that can realize the function models of studying path record agent and cognition assessment agent. Studying path record agent can dynamically record the knowledge that a student is visiting and show the visiting status at any time. It is used to track which part has been learned and which hasn't when a student is studying network course. According to this record it can remind a student the next program. Cognition assessmentagent can analyze the studying of a student according to exercises assessment. A program of fuzzy reasoning is given in the paper. It can show the cognition of a student and also give some good suggestions about studying. JSP+JavaBean model was used in the development for the system platform. The design and realization of network education system besed on agent technology was completed. Test shown that the expected result was achieved. It is hoped that the development and research of the system may bring more research and more people working in this area.
