Research Of Hospital Data Warehouse

Hospital Information System (HIS) mainly concerns on the daily structure questions, aiming at improving the hospital's operation efficiency. It strengthens the management by converting the massive data to valuable information. A hospital needs database with strong functions, which should collect the basic information, diagnosis information, cure information, medicine information of the patients and medical men's information. The information can't provide reference and necessary support for the decision makers. With the society's progress and the technical development, the old data analysis technology can't meet the increasing needs.In these days, DW has already been a mature technology abroad, but it is only during concept popularizing period and there are very few successful exemplifications in our country. Hospital Information Systems (HIS) has been widely established in most hospitals of China. Though lots of medical and management data has been accumulated, little information supporting decision has been found. Since broadening sources of income and reducing expenditure became the major management concern in medical institutions, it has been a hot topic in HIS of how to make full use of the valuable accumulated data and how to provide the supporting information of decision for the hospital managers. Data warehouse and the related techniques are newly developed database technologies in recent years. It supports decision by reconstructing and storing the data according to the subjects, and extracting and mining useful information trough OLAP. Remarkable achievements have been seen in the application of data warehouse to finance andtelecommunications, and the data warehouse has become the foundation of decision support systems (DSS) . Consequently, this paper exploits data warehouse(DW) technique to store and analyze the history information, so as to provide enterprise standard report forms and diagrams, and to provide strength support for decision making and data mining.Based on the HIS data from some hospital, this paper studied the design process of hospital data warehouse in detail. This paper mainly finished the following work:(1) It converted the background database in HIS, analyzed the data structure and their relationship, and determined the subjects and related database information combining data driven system designing method and requirements.(2) It designed the logical model and physical model for HIS data warehouse. In model designing, it discussed the key problems such as subject determination, classification of data granularities and data segmentation, decided the strategies in designing HIS data warehouse, and realized the corresponding data structure utilizing Microsoft SQL Server2000;(3) Load HIS data warehouse by SQL, DTS from SQL Server2000, programming and a few hand input jobs.By research of the theory of DW, this thesis came up with the design strategy of medical DW concretely and realized the storing of the data in HIS data warehouse, which provided necessary preparation for data mining.
