Motorola PowerPC (MPC) chip has been used extensively in communication and network equipments because of its powerful capabilities of communication and protocols processing, thus it makes sense to implement the driver of an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) interface based on MPC8280. Sponsored by the project named"prototype of a 10 Gbps Large Capacity ATM Switch on-board", this dissertation researchs the driver of an ATM interface based on MPC8280.This dissertation first introduces the software and hardware development platform of the ATM interface driver, analyzes the architecture of ATM protocol and its principle, and studies the specification of Universal Test & Operations PHY Interface for ATM (UTOPIA) Interface and three key mechanisms of the ATM controller,including ATM Pace Controller (APC) scheduling, address mapping and interrupt processing. The detailed description is the design of the ATM interface driver based on the MPC8280 embedded development board, which implements the function of ATM Adapter layer 5 (AAL5) and ATM layer in ATM protocols. According to the principle of Faster Communication Controller (FCC) working in the ATM protocol mode, the driver is partitioned to five parts, i.e. the initialization, receiving data, transmitting data, interruption and error processing. That driver is accomplished under the embedded Linux operation system. Finally, this dissertation investigates on constructing the software development platform on the embedded Linux operation system, and designes the driver debugging and testing method, and summarizes some questions and their resolving means. The research aspect to be studied further is also presented.
