The rapid growth in data traffic is serving as a catalyst for the public network to evolve from a static, voice-centric infrastructure to a dynamic infrastructure. The traditional SDH network architecture was originally designed for voice traffic and not suitable for high-speed data network services. Voice traffic is predictable and characterized by slow growth. In contrast, data traffic is unpredictable and characterized by rapid growth. In order to quickly scale to meet this unpredictable demand for bandwidth, carriers begin to think about deploying intelligent optical networks. The Automatic Switched Optical Network (ASON) based intelligent optical network enable service providers to quickly provision services and dramatically reduce their time to revenue from months to minutes. Through the control plane, this new network can manage resource flexibly.In this thesis the research of a Metro ASON design is carried out which is combined with Dalian Netcom Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) actual construction engineering. First, the development and research status of ASON analyzed deeply, the necessity of the Metro ASON design and the importance of evolution from traditional optical networks to ASON are clearly indicated; Then the ASON structure and ASON control plane technology are researched, that the separation of management and control function is the development bases is put forward; Finally Dalian MAN design based on the ASON is carried out. In the design the Dalian Netcom's Network Status is analyzed first, then the designed ASON projects based on existing network are proposed and two projects designed are researched in details, last an optimized design project is put forward.The research in the thesis is tightly combined with the practice of project, with the main emphasis on solving the Dalian Municipal Construction intelligent optical network engineering problems. In the study the intelligent optical network technology requirements and the actual existing communications network resources are considered totally. The researched design project is of important practical significance for the building of Dalian City-based intelligent metro optical networks.
