IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) featuring distributed, access independence, and open service controle interface is the universal framework which provides realtime or non-realtime IP multimedia services. It is the core standard realizing the networks convergence and services convergence, and is the important basis to make innovations in technologies, services, and even business. Nowadays, as it occupies an important place at the standardization organizations such as 3GPP, 3GPP2, ETSI, ITU-T, the relevant standards are being established and improved. The products and testbeds are being unveiled by the network equipment providers, meanwhile the trial offices are being deployed by the telecommunication operators. Gradually IMS will become the core control plane of next generation network.The thesis studies the prototype implementation of IMS based on the open source software projects, in which the core network elements such as CSCF, HSS, MRF, UE, AS has been realized. Furthermore, aiming to reveal its functions, the demonstration applications are exploited based on it.The prototype implementation of IMS based on open source software projects is deployed as an open technology test field with the target to prototype and validate existing and emerging IMS standards and to extend the IMS appropriately to be used on top of new access networks as well as to provide new appealing multimedia applications. With the IMS prototype implementation, operators can setup the open IMS testbed by which the evolution and compatibility of the telecommunication network could be studied, while service providers and developers can develope and validate the new multimedia applications.In this thesis, the features, architecture and the protocols of IMS-based Next Generation Network are firstly analyzed. And then the open technologies of the NGN services in the service layer of the horizontal layering infrastructure are discussed. The main body of the thesis introduces the prototype implemetation of IMS based on the open source software projects such as Open IMS Core, SEMS, OpenSER, and UCT IMS Client. The functional requiremnts, the installation, and the structure of the main modules are addressed in-depth. In the conclusion, the development and implementation of demo applications are presented.
