Recently years, the communications and information technology are walking more closely. The demand of telecom service is turning to fixed-mobile and voice-web convergent. The acess technology is turning to broadband access too. The traditional operators are facing competion from Web-based ISP, i.e., Google, Yahoo, iTune, etc. The traditional operators are facing the risk of both decline of the subscribers and revenue.IP Multimedia Subsystem(IMS), featuring distributed,access independence, open service controle interface and supporting realtime or non-realtime IP multimedia services, is regarded the core network of the next generation network. Currently, the key standards bodies are involved to research IMS.The main-stream vendors invested on IMS. Leading Operators launched the IMS lab-test and commercial trials. Some telecom market advisories forcasted IMS'market revenue will grow up rapidly in the next few years.Huawei, a leading communication vendor, has launched the advanced,commcercial IMS products. However, in some cases:unit test in development phase, business promotion and presentation, IOT test with 3-party's equipments, we do need a low-cost, compact and portable IMS systems.According to these realistic demand, we evaluated some candidated solution, then decide to build a compact IMS system based on the open-source projects.This thesis first address the next-generation networks(NGN) based on IMS thesis, including IMS concept and protocols, IMS standards development process, the current mainstream communications vendors choices, the mainstream operator IMS decisions, as well as some telecom advisory forcasting. Then, this thesis introduced how to build a compact IMS prototype with the "Open-source" software:Open IMS Core from FOKUS,SEMS from IPTEL,GlassFish from SUN,OpenIC and so on。This IMS prototype system fully complies with the 3GPP IMS architecture. Some IMS services are also introduced to show the IMS-based capability.Finally, we test this compact IMS with the well-known Wireshark Network-analysis tools and SIPp.This thesis' work show that such an IMS prototype based on open source software fully meet the project objectives. The test results showed this compact IMS prototype is full complying with the IMS standard. This compact IMS prototype is suitable for services delvelopment, IMS test bed, portable IMS demonstrate platform. Maybe such a compact IMS platform can meet the small-medium enterprise's telecom demands.
