At present, General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB) is very popular in establishing Automatic Test System. It integrates virtual instrument technology, computer theory and powerful testing apparatus. Automatic test technique has been widely applied to many testing fields, due to its rapid testing speed, high accuracy, powerful functions and good expandability.Teaching innovation as the starting point, this paper designs an integrated test system which is suitable for the teaching using the existing computer resource. This test platform has the direct-viewed experimental result, and it is convenient for setting up and realizing long-distance experiments and course content modernization and so on.By building a distributed automatic test system based on GPIB, this articleintroduced the communication principle of GPIB, emphasized in the implementation of IEEE-488.2 communication protocol in VB environment, and presented the development method and structure of the automatic test system. A computer links several programmable instruments by GPIB bus, forming a lower layer network. The computer runs testing software,remote controls the measuring instruments to achieve some testing processes on the ship's electric network, including parameters' measuring,acquisition, filtering, and error analysis of test system. These different kinds of data can be saved in the Access database. Then the computer connects with other client computers through LAN, building up an upper layer network based on TCP/IP,achieving instruments' remote control and distributed measuring. The instruments, computers and networks compose a distributed automatic test system, which offers performance of sharing the instruments. The paper also focused on the implementation approach of system's distributed testing function,introduced the TCP/IP protocol,and the communication principle of Winsock control as well as the network communication technique in this system.Finally, this paper summarized the system's design process and proposed the long-distance realization scheme, and forecasting the current automatic test system development tendency and pointing out the needed work for the further studies.
