Nowadays, Traffic jam is a problem in many cities. Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is a key to the problem. Many people engage themselves in it. In ITS which has a huge and complex architecture, traffic information acquisition is a basic function. The method to design and realize such a subsystem used for information acquisition in ITS is the work of this paper. In function structure, radio frequency identification (RFID) technique is referenced in the system designed by this paper. The system includes base station and electronic plate, and the information acquisition is carried out by the communication between them. In realization method, high-performance digital signal processor (DSP) is used with other corresponding peripheral devices to implement the communication function under a kind of communication protocol defined by ourselves. In the capability, hardware test board is used as development platform to implement communication function by coding on it, and through the communication test data analysis, we got optimized parameter of our protocol and confirmed that the capability of our system completely meet the demands of actual environment. This paper includes the following components:The first part is the specification of the RF communication protocol, It's based on the well known slotted-ALOHA, which is a member of the ALOHA protocol. This paper analysis the performance of both slotted-ALOHA and ALOHA protocol. Then give the definition of the frame structure, data structure and error control mechanism. In the second part, a hardware structure of the system is designed which is divided into two parts, wireless base station and electronic number plate. In the hardware structure design, it uses TI's TMS320C6000 series high-performance DSP as the computing unit, integrated RF chip as transceiver module and clock, power, Flash, serial communication chips as external auxiliary circuit to meet the functional demands of the system. In the third part, it describes the software implementation process of the wireless protocol on the test platform of VPM-642 development board. Through a mount of communication test, the communication protocol has been proved to be feasible and efficient.
