With the ripeness and application of optic access network, EPON is a very competitive resolution for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH). EPON can afford more than 10Mbps bandwidth to every subscriber, and how to offer much more service on it is a hot research content now. A system that can transport digital TV program to thousands of family is given in this paper. Audio and video compressing encoding is one of the key technologies of the IPTV system based on EPON. MPEG-2 encode standard is used in the system. Transport stream (TS) that carry TV program are encapsulated into IP packets, and are transmitted in the network. Design of audio and video compressing encoding module of the system is a significant task of the project.In the paper, EPON network, A/V encoding standards, HFC cable TV network and IPTV are introduced briefly. MPEG-2 standard is chose in the IPTV system. The basic technology of MPEG-2 compress encoding is presented chiefly. And MPEG-2 TS and its analysis basic method are introduced.According to the need of application, an MPEG-2 encoding module based on SAA6752 was developed. The paper gives the detailed description of design of software and hardware of the module. The main ASIC chips and their peripheral circuits are introduced, and the whole design process is analyzed.Finally, the test method of the encoding module is presented. After tested and analyzed the TS outputting from the module by a TS analyzer, subjective review of video encoding effect is made. The test result indicates that the module can be used in the IPTV system to achieve high quality TV program transport.
