As one of the most important technology of radio resource management (RRM), soft handover (SHO) has been used in CDMA system first, and got further application at the age of 3G. The thesis emphasizes on the study of SHO technology of WCDMA system. At first, the thesis gives a general introduction of the basic theory and the achievement flow of WCDMA SHO. Then, after analyzing the present SHO algorithm, a Self-Adaptive SHO algorithm evaluated through simulation is raised, which works well in situation of changed network load.During the continuous development of SHO algorithm at the age of CDMA, the classic SHO algorithm has been quite stable till the age of WCDMA. However, in 3G network, the performance of SHO suffers greatly from the wireless environment, network load and so on, which makes the improvement of SHO algorithm possible. In this thesis, a main work is to research the influence of SHO on the system performance, the influence of SHO parameters setting on the SHO performance and the optimization of SHO parameters. On the basis of that, a Self-Adaptive SHO algorithm is raised with the object balancing the requirements of the link quality and system resource. This algorithm can adjust the SHO object according to the changes of network load, link quality is the priority in the low load, while system resource is the priority in the high load. At last, detailed simulation and analysis result is given to evaluate the improved algorithm.
