Image fusion is to synthesize images or image sequences about some specific scene to generate a new explanation about scene, which can't be obtained from single sensor. In recent years, image fusion has been an important and useful technology of image understanding and computer visual sense. Multi-focus image fusion is fusing several images which are got by each target focused separately and shot repeatly. The purpose is getting a clear image in which each target is distinct. This technology can effectively improve utilization ratio of image information and the identification of the target detection system reliability. So this technology is widely utilized in machine vision, digital camera and target recognition. Image fusion can be divided into three levels, pixel level fusion, feature level fusion and the decision-making level fusion. The image fusion based on pixel level is widely utilized at present. In pixel level image fusion, the multi-resolution image fusion algorithm is very important and widely utilized. According to various forms of decomposition, the multi-resolution image fusion algorithm can be divided into algorithm based on pyramidal decomposition and algorithm based on wavelet transform. The pyramidal decomposition includes Laplace Pyramid, Gradient Pyramid and LP Ratio Pyramid.This paper focuses on the multi-focus image fusion algorithm based on wavelet transform. The experimental image is multi-focus image got by filter simulation. On the basis of image fusion algorithm based on wavelet, this paper puts a new multi-focus image fusion algorithm based on wavelet directional contrast by further analysis and improvement. This algorithm takes use of the human visual system being sensitive to image local contrast. At the same time it considers the relationship of image regional pixels. The fusion consequence is better than traditional image fusion algorithm based on wavelet directional contrast. The main content of this paper includes the following aspects:Firstly, this paper discussed the basic theory, present state and means of image fusion technology, classified multi-focus image fusion algorithm and evaluation means of image fusion consequences.Sencondly, this paper researched the multi-focus image fusion algorithm based on wavelet transform, put improved multi-focus image fusion algorithm based on wavelet directional contrast and simulated this algorithm.Thirdly, this paper researched the multi-focus image fusion algorithm based on wavelet packet transform.Finally, this paper summarized the research achievement and insufficient of this paper and pointed out development direction.
