ForCES(Forwarding and Control Element Separation) is a working group belonging to the routing area in IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). As one of the primary members in ForCES, we designed a ForCES-based router prototype to validate the technical feasibility of the ForCES protocol and relevant drafts. This thesis focuses on the research and implementation method of network management agent based on SNMP and AgentX in the ForCES-based router. Our purpose is to find out an appropriate way of network management on the system resources and working state in the ForCES-based router.Firstly, this thesis analyzes the network management requirements in a ForCES-based router and indicates the implementation difficulties of SNMP agent. On the basis of centralized agents and extensible agents, a kind of extensible agent scheme based on SNMP and AgentX is put forward. This scheme is also suitable to distributed system structures.Secondly, the author implemented the proposed scheme. In this implementation, the author brought forward SNMP datagram transmission mechanism, MIB distribution mechanism that realizes the dynamic expansion of MIB modules and improves management efficiency, communication mechanism of Interface Module to enhance the stability and reliability of the entire system, the mapping mechanism of MIB OID and PathData providing the conversion mode between conceptual MIBs and the practical managed objects. All of these have fully met the network management requirements in a ForCES-based router. Combing the above key mechanisms, the thesis designed in detail the whole system structure including one main agent and two sub-agents, the communication interface of these agents and other related module in the ForCES-based router, so as to achieve management and control on the ForCES protocol and FE ports.Finally, the proposed methods are proved to be feasible using some experiments on Interfaces MIB OID and ForCES MIB OID in a ForCES-based router.The main contribution of the thesis is to design and implement a kind of new and original extensible agent scheme, which applies the AgentX protocol as extensible framework successfully for fitting the ForCES system. This implementation provides certain reference value to other new network devices on the implementation of network management.
