The 80s of the 20th century was a special period in the history ofpublishing industry in Hunan. The industry underwent a drastic reform inthis period. The massive emergence of elite editors and books crownedthe local publishing industry a proud brand the Xiang-Military ofPublishing.This paper captured the 10-year booming phenomenon during1979-1988 for an in-depth research. Begin with analysis of the 10-yearachievement of Hunan publishing industry, the paper found that Hunanpublishing industry has experienced rapid growth and gained greatachievement that demonstrated by numeric indicators, book awards andcomparison with other key publishing provinces. Further the paperdiscussed innovation of the Xiang-Military of Publishing from threeperspectives. A) As an overview, the paper walked through the industrydevelopment background, National Publishing Working Conference'79,establishment of local professional publisher and several key bookexhibition and exchange activities. The overview shows that breaking theprinciple of localization and popularization has been the first step of theinnovation. B) Case study on five elite editors' practice shows theinnovation spirit of the Xiang-Military in Publishing. C) Introductionbranded books published in Hunan and the editing philosophy thereindemonstrates the achievement of innovation. At last, the paper revealedthe culture source of the innovation spirit the relationship in between.CONCLUSION: under the influence of local culture, Hunan publishingindustry, the Xiang-Military in Publishing developed vastly spreadinnovation spirit. The spirit started from breaking the Principle of localization and popularization and have outstanding representatives likeHU Zhen et al, as known as Four Knights. It also led to an achievementof substantial branded books and left long-term impact.
