With the development of Internet and the emergence of new traffics, the internet traffic has a rapid growth which requires high transmission rates. Internet traffic has shown the characteristics of diversity and bursty, so in recent years, Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is proposed. The combination of the advanced Optical Burst Switching and Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS), Labeled Optical Burst Switching (LOBS), brings an integrated model for IP over Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), which combines the intelligence control of electronic technology and large capacity of optical switching technology, and will be an ideal optical switching technology for future Internet.In this paper, the design and implementation of the network management system of LOBS network is studied and this project is supported by 863 program-"Study on LOBS key technologies of LOBS network". The design is based on Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and the signaling is transmitted on the existing IP network. The whole system is divided into two parts: agent runs on embedded Linux system and manager which is realized by VB.net runs on PC.The background of OBS is firstly introduced in this paper, including the architecture of LOBS, edge node, core node, and so on. The main contents are also briefly introduced.In this paper, the requirement and aim of LOBS network management system are analyzed, it is pointed out that the emphasis should be put on the optical burst layer and traffic management should take instead of connecting management in optical network. The controlling and information collecting for core node and edge node should be separated. For LOBS network management system the SNMP protocol is chosen and the signaling is transmitted on the existing IP network.The implementation of the whole system is described in detail, including the MIB and software modules. The MIB includes topology monitoring, performance management, arithmetic parameter configuration and controlling of MPLS protocol. The software module is divided into agent module and management module, and this paper is focused on the agent module, which is composed of three parts: communication module with the manager, interface of MPLS protocol and arithmetic modules.Finally, the design and the implementation of network management system in LOBS network are concluded, and some suggestions are proposed to improve the performance of the system.
