With the continuous development of the managed network size and application of new network technologies, scope of network management system and sorts of managed resource are always increasing; management operations become intricate, and it's difficult to achieve good interoperability with network management systems across heterogeneous networks.Firstly, this thesis describes the interoperability requirement of network management systems across heterogeneous networks, analyzes problems of designing and implementing network management system software in such environment. Secondly, the Java Management Extension (JMX) and related technology specifications are studied; benefits from designing network management system software based on JMX architecture are analyzed. Meanwhile, the Integrated Network Monitoring and Management System (INMS) project is offered as an example. The project background, design principles, functioning structure are introduced in brief, while the configuration management module are in detail.Further more, this thesis proposes a prototype solution of mapping the managed information in a JMX-based network management system to comply with the Common Information Model in Web-based Enterprise Management (CIM/WBEM). CIM modeling process is presented step by step, with configuration management module of INMS project as the instance. At the end, flaws and limitations on this prototype solution is discussed, and points of improvement are suggested.
