At present, as the development of IC design technology and the increase of complexity in application system, the traditional synchronous system design approach will be faced with enormous technical challenges. On the other hand, the design of real-time control system with features such as distribution and concurrence has high requirements on real-time quality, reliability, and low power consumption. There is a feasible method that dividing the system into a number of independent modules, each module at different clock domain. Thereby we can get a system with asynchronous and concurrence, and can use asynchronous communication mechanism (ACM) as the method to resolve the interconnect and data transmission problems between modules at different clock domain. The paper firstly presents the basic theory of ACM, including the nature, the fashion, the classification and the properties of ACM; Secondly, builds the abstract mathmatical model P-FSM and S-FSM for the basic ACM type Pool and Signal by the Finite State Machine (FSM) theory, then analyzes the related characteristics of ACM and the affection of metastability to ACM by these models; Thirdly, builds the simulation models EP-ACM and ES-ACM found on P-FSM and S-FSM by the Stateflow and Simulink tools in Matlab; Fourthly, introduces several new type ACMs by expanding the basic types, such as Combination ACM, Buffered ACM, Multi-reader ACM, Bidirectional ACM, and ACM with Agent, some of them are simulated and analyzed by Simulink tool; Finally, studies the hardware implementation and the possible application areas of ACM, such as in Network Control System, and gives a model AIM for system interconnect framework.
