With the rapidly development of multimedia signal compression and broadband networks technologies, methods of transmitting high-quality multimedia information via networks have become one hottest point of IT technologies. Researches and developments of Embedded Linux system technology are becoming another important IT technology. Embedded system is an application specific computer system that focuses on the application and it is based on the computer technology. Its hardware and software can be cut down. Its application is used more broadly. Especially in today of fast development of network techniques, the combination of embedded system and network communication techniques will become a focused issue within long time research.The paper designs a overall configuration based on the embedded platform of ARM9 processor S3C2410 and Linux operation system. The paper adopt the MPEG-4 hardware compressing chip to realize a embedded network video terminal which have the function of video collecting compressing and transmission.The paper researchs the advantage and trend of Embedded system, advantage of ARM, and construction of Linux. The MPEG-4 video compressing techniques and IP multi-broadcast techniques are used for assurance of techniques. The specific plan is that using a CCD camera to collect video data, using SAA7114 to transfer the data from analog to digital. The end, the compressed video data will send to customer by UDP protocol. It provides a good hardware and software platform for the whole system. The paper designs the interface of the IME6400 and SAA7114 that belongs to the video-processing manner. The paper also designs the interface of periphery CPU and Internet that belongs to the network-controlling manner. Linux operation system is replanted and core of Linux is compiled. The paper uses the model of Client/Server to realize the network transmission of video image.To design and research a real-time multimedia transmission system based on embedded Linux not only combines multimedia signal compression technology and networks technology, but also explores the application of the embedded Linux technology. The content of this thesis might be helpful to develop the multimedia transmission technology.
