The emergence of digital video has created widespread opportunities to include video and multimedia in the way we communicate, compute,and find entertainment. Applications of this technology include videoconferencing, digital cable television, HDTV, multimedia computing, digital video discs, digital personal assistant and so on, some of the applications are based on the embedded system. The embedded sytem requires the processor with high performance but low power consumption, and limited bandwidth available requires high efficient video encoders. These issues will be shown to have a significant impact on the design of video encoders.The high-performance digital signal processor—YHFT-Dx, is designed independently by the computer school of NUDT. The processors have been batched tape-out, so developing applications based on YHFT-Dx and providing the system solutions to customers are the most important research project, on the other hand, study on the application algorithms can give some worthwhile suggestion to improve the DSP's architecture so as to enhance the DSP's algorithms processing ability.The subject of this thesis is the optimization of MPEG-4 video algorithms based on YHFT-Dx DSP, and the design of a real-time video encoder. Furthermore a way to improve the DSP's performance is presented. The following are the main achievements:1) Do deap research on the MPEG-4 video standard, analyse the main video processing algorithms and their complexity. The complexity analysis will be a reference for the algorithm designers and video developers.2) Optimize the algorithms based on the VLIW architectural features and systemize the algorithm optimization technologies.3) Develop a real-time video encoder according to MPEG-4 SP standard by using the optimization technologies presented in the thesis. The typical performance of the encoder is: CIF up to 25fps@200MHz. The encoder has been applied successfully in the network camera system, which has been adopted by some company as the solution of its security monitoring product.4) Base on the VLIW architecture, extend SIMD and the video specific instuctions for YHFT-Dx. The SIMD and the video specific instructions greatly accelerate the DSP's video processing ability.
