Internet had been developing rapidly in the past twenty years. The whole society has been influenced greatly by Internet. However, the problem of energy consumption of Internet is also becoming serious because of the increasing of network size and demand for bandwidth. High performance routers are not only the core nodes of network communication, but also one of the primary sources of energy consumption of Internet.Based on ACPI specification (Advanced configuration and Power Interface specification) and the characteristics of network traffic, an idea of software and hardware cooperation is introduced to the energy saving design of routers; and also a new scheme of dynamic power management architecture--HERPM is proposed and several key techniques of HERPM are discussed in depth .The main work and contributions of this article are as following :(1) Aiming at the hysteresis of OS-centralized dynamic power management architecture and the shortage of insufficient using of the fine grain energy saving potential, a new scheme of HERPM architecture is proposed. Based on ACPI, HERPM not only improves the suitability of power management decision by taking advantage of OS, Which entirely controls the whole running situation of the equipment, but also effectively develops the potential of short-term-interval packets to gain higher conserving efficiency by using the quick speed of the hardware .(2) In order to verify the advantage of HERPM, we build the state transition model of dynamic power management for router system and its components. This model precisely divides the performance requirement and power consumption, so the power of the system and the workload match each other perfectly. On the basis of transition model, we put forward four transition algorithms which are easy to hardware implementation. Taking xscale core as an example, which is widely used in Intel series network processors, we compared these four kinds of algorithms, analyzed and evaluated the energy conservation efficiency and their effect on packet latency.(3) Aiming at the present status of many researches focusing on single computer or router, the network level's dynamic management model is proposed . In this model , routers in the same managed domain not only transfer routing information, but also transfer workload and power information. In the process of forming coherence, the condition of conserve energy by using coordinated sleeping is also created.In this article, we also discussed several key problems of coordinated energy conservation between routers and deeply analyzed the influence of energy conservation to current network protocols. We have worked out a possible solution. The work in this article can serve as an important guideline for the design and implementation of energy conservation to high performance routers.
