At present, the technology of video animation, 3D games and virtual reality technology is rapid development, the application of three-dimensional geometric models in these fields have become wider and wider, the complexity of models that constructed and dialed with in these fields is higher and higher. It issue in the contradiction between the model complexity and the computer hardware performance, because the growth of the model complexity is unlimited but the growth of computer storage capacity, computing speed and the transmission speed is limited. Thus the model simplification technology was developed at the historic moment. Recently the model simplification technology became the focus studied in the computer graphics. One part work of this paper is to carry on the significative exploration in this aspect.This dissertation studied the technology and Algorithm on Multiresolution model of existing, the study included refinement method and decimation method, the decimation method is the focus of the study. We analyzed the principle, complex nature, advantage and disadvantage of the existing algorithms. This dissertation introduced the quality evaluation criteria on model simplification——Simi1atity of appearance error and Geometric approximation error.This dissertation presents a new algorithm of mesh simplification based on triangle collapse. The algorithm gives the triangle's weight, the order of collapse and make a continuous level of detail model by calculating the maximum distances between the vertices and there related average plane for each triangle and based on the area, attribute and the predefined characteristic. The algorithm advances the choice and processing on the attribute of the new vertex. The algorithm structures the multiresolution model with the progressive mesh.In addition, the tool application for triangle mesh simplification was developed with VC++6.0 platform and OpenGL, this software can process the model scenes *.3ds form. It integrated the new algorithm of model simplification based on triangle collapse in this paper. The experiment has proved its validity. This algorithm is quickly and easy to implement and it thinks over the surface properties (such as color and texture) and the predefined characteristic, it can effectively simplify the model with the surface properties.
