With the development of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) technology, CAE software is used widely mechanics, automobile, aeronautics, astronautics etc. CAE software can be used thermal fluent analysis, dynamical simulation of mechanism, whole vehicle simulation, metal sheet forming simulation etc. To satisfy the more and more requirement of engineering application, the models for CAE software to construct and use is becoming bigger and more complicate. The storage transmission and the real-time display are difficult. Simplification of mesh model is an effective method to solve the problem.In this thesis, the existing algorithms for mesh simplification are analyzed, based on the result, the technology of mesh simplification are deeply studied. The main works of the thesis include:1. The triangular model simplification technology are introduced systematically and comprehensively. The level of detail model technology is studied deeply. Some typical existing level of detail model simplification algorithm are analyzed and compared.2. A level of detail model generation algorithm based on geometrical feature is presented. First, all topological features in the original mesh model are stored, then sort all the edges according to the importance of vertex, finally delete the edges which lead to sliver triangle and which lead to the discontinuity of triangle normal vectors.3. A progressive mesh generation algorithm based on edge collapse is improved. Based on the Hoppe's progressive mesh generation algorithm, restrict the simplified mesh model's vertices to the initial mesh model's vertex set, when refinement sequence is generated. This can reduce the information included in the refinement sequence. According to above research, the two algorithms that is a level of detail model generation algorithm based on geometrical feature and the progressive mesh generation algorithm mentioned above are implemented by c+ + language. The practice application shows that these algorithms are efficient in both time and space, and they can preserve the vital geometrical features can be preserved after the simplification.
