Along with the rapid developments of micro-electronics, computer, network, and communication in the 21th century, the digital video system is playing an important role in our daily life and the applications of video image processing technology are more and more wide. The fast development of VLSI technology provides the hardware base for the video image processing technology, Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) has the advantages of good-performance, high integration and low power consumption. Because of the programmabilities of FPGA, the designers can upgrade the system by reworking and configuring the logic structure easily. FPGA is specially good for embedded video image processing operations.NiosⅡmicroprocessor which is developed by Altera Inc. based on SOPC technology is a changeable, general RISC CPU. The developer can conveniently design the system by using SOPC Builder. Using NiosⅡcpu combined with the developer's idea can be realized in FPGA. The whole design process represents the design idea of reconfigurable, orient to user, orient to application. Other than, using the integrated development platform and assistant development tools related to NiosⅡcan improve the development speed of NiosⅡsystem design and verification, which has the good wealth and active signification to the development and application of embedded system products.In this paper, it is designed with a FPGA based video development platform. The hardware circuits based on EP2C35F484C8 which is a kind of Altera CycloneⅡseries FPGA has been designed and realized. The paper introduces the designs of the circuit modules of the development system in detail, which include power module, video in/out module, communication interface module, configuration module and so on. Analog video signal sampling, processing, transmission functions can be realized by using NiosⅡmicroprocessor. Based on this hardware platform, the software design has also been discussed.
