The Internet developed for more than 20 years, the scale and the ability has been keeping on growing rapidly. The new application emerges everyday and the trend of broadband and integration seems non-interruptible. In order to cope with the speed of the Internet developing and satisfy the requirement of network processing, new technologies including from IPv6, QoS to BWA have been designed, ratified and standardized. This article based on the 'integrated broadband access controller' project, which is a subsection to CNGI, explicitly discussed the design of IPv6 router based on network processor. Firstly the article described the principle of network processor also the hardware specific, the system structure, and programming module of Intel IXP2400. The IPv6 router system software specially the router forwarder module was realized in data path within single NP platform; secondly the article analyzed the basic structure of QoS and described the technologies of how to realize it. Based on DiffServ module and IXP2400 NP a new resolution in double NP platform was designed. The performance analyzing, software simulation and black box testing show that the router could process IPv6 packets in linear speed efficiently and stably and the QoS module could meet the basic requirement.
