In design of valve product, manufacturing enterprises and designers of valve industry accumulate design experience and design knowledge in field. Design of valve product includes innovation and serialization design. It has highly inherited character and design relationship of product structure and follows special design pattern and process. The valve has parametric feature because of similarity of design problem and product structure. Oriented to industry application and product design process, 3D parametric design system for valve is built, based on domain design knowledge.Through applying domain design principle and knowledge, similar design, and expert experience into geometric model, the system realizes knowledge resource reuse of valve design and intelligence and automation of design process.Using the related theories and methods of KBE, the paper synthetically analyses structure characteristics of the typical valve product and design process, and provides summary, induction and classification of the related domain knowledge involved in valve product design. On the basis of the above content, it discusses the realization mechanism and construct mode of 3D parametric design system for valve based on KBE.The research of the paper includes: based on ontology and the association of valve components assembly and design, product models of all kinds of valves are constructed, which becomes the basis of product design of CBR (Case-based Reasoning) and case reuse. Through building disassembly structure of product design and the corresponding knowledge of design disassembly, the system builds the product design knowledge model and constructs the related classification design knowledge into the system knowledge library. Based on the mixed reasoning mechanism of CBR and RBR (Rule-based Reasoning), it makes the rules and realization method of design case searching, reusing, modifying and saving during the product design By building the models of valve design process, it guides the whole process of the product. By standardizing design realization process of all kinds of designed components of product model, it drives parametric model of design object with major design parameters and relevant detailed design parameters. And it studies the intelligence assembly realization mechanism, which synchronizes with design process.Based on the above research work, a 3D parametric design system for typical valve product is built with the off-the-shelf CAD software—CAXASolid and its customized development interface, and the data base management system—SQL Sever2000. With the related research on domain knowledge support mechanism and function realization, the paper provides an efficient design tool oriented to design process and based on domain knowledge support for valve product design.
