Embedding sensors into materials and structures has been a topic in the last two decades. Fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensors become the first choice of these sensors for its advantages such as EMI immunity, high sensitivity, relatively small size etc. However, embedding the optical fiber is challenging because the fibers need to be embedded in a metal structure that has a high melting temperature. Clearly, the optical fiber needs protection during the high-temperature deposition step. In particular, a protective layer may be needed to overcome the temperature and stress induced by the embedding process. To get a metallic coating on fiber, we developed a sequence that involves pretreating fiber, electroless Ni-plating film as a conductive layer on the fiber, electroplating the fibers with a Ni layer as a protective layer. The temperature sensing property was discussed after metalizing. The experiment demonstrate that fiber Bragg grating was protected effectively. The results can provid guidance for further study of fiber smart metal structure.
