Chinese ancient architecture plays an important role in the history ofworld architecture. Ancient constructions of different ages not only reflectthe achievements of architecture and art of that time, but also providevaluable resources for the research of society development. During thelong history, the remains of ancient constructions are rare and weredestructed in different levels. It is very important and impendent to takeeffective measures to protect and repair them. In this paper, technologiesof computer-aided protection of Chinese ancient architecture are studied,and the research work consists of two parts as follows:In the first part, we apply color transfer technology to virtual colorrestoration of fading decorating images in the ancient constructions. Inorder to restore the color of decorating images with different fadingdegree, three different color transfer algorithms are proposed to carry outvirtual color restoration, including: colorization of gray images based onhistogram mapping and image layers for severely faded decoratingimages with simple designs, color transfer algorithm based on imagesegmentation and region match for complex decorating images, andregional color transfer based on Color Reference Model for both severelyfaded and complex decorating images. The experimental results provethat these algorithms proposed herein are excellent, and valuable forcomputer aided restoration of ancient architecture.In the second part, technologies of virtual wandering and interactiondesign are studied and applied in virtual architecture scenes. Firstly,virtual panorama is adopted to design an interactive virtual wanderingsystem for demonstrating the existent ancient constructions. With thissystem, people all over the world can enjoy the virtual tour with theChinese ancient constructions through the internet as they are personallyin the scene. Secondly, referring to the practical surveying datum andhistorical documents, historical architectures in different period arereconstructed with virtual modeling software, and a video is designed toshow the development of the historical construction. Finally, by usingMATLAB virtual reality toolbox, interactive technologies with virtualarchitecture scenes are studied. Furthermore, virtual modeling languagecombined with JAVA is chosen to design more complicated interactions with virtual architecture scenes.
