Due to good mobility support and abundant addresses, Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) brings out a bright perspective of the integration between Mobile Communication and Internet. As a key factor that impacts the performances of the mobile networks greatly, handover must be well discussed and designed. This paper briefly introduced the basics of MIPv6 and its mobility firstly. Then the details of Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6 (FMIPv6) are analyzed and simulated. The simulation result shows that delay and packet-loss-rate, which are the two fatal factors impacting the network performances, are greatly reduced in FMIPv6 compared with MIPv6. This paper further proposed an improved FMIPv6 signaling procedure to make FMIPv6 more suitable for 802.11a networks. Besides, this paper implemented a simple level-2 path-selection protocol based on 802.11a to simulate FMIPv6 on a mesh network. |
