In this paper, power monitoring system functions as an automatic monitoring and management system in the process of power distribution or consumption. The core of the system is based on a management center and couples of remote monitors. The function of remote monitor is commonly seen as simple and limited use, yet, with the development of the power management, the power monitoring system has more functions and can be applied in wider areas, which requires a flexible combination of the remote monitors. This article introduces a new kind of remote monitor based on the CAN bus that meets the new requirements of the trends.The solution of the new kind of remote monitor realized the goal of the functions and capabilities brought out by the requirements of the power monitoring system. It splits the system into main board, channel and functional modules. The functional modules include display, meter, remote control, switch, pulse, FQD, etc. All the modules are connected through the CAN bus with the main board, which forms a single RTU (remote terminal unit) or a distributed opening area network. Also the modules can be adopted under different circumstances. All the characteristics also realize the requirement of flexibility.The solution is depicted by a integrate example in the article. By the example, the article analyses the hardware configuration terms, the software designing of the CAN bus control interface. Also by the example, the article establishes an efficient and neat high level protocol of CAN, brings out the modular, separable, real time and multitask designing thought in foreground/background system. As the example of main board, a reliable and low-power consumption design method is introduced. The integrate example is applied in a relative small area of the power monitoring system. The application shows that the technique of the CAN bus in remote monitors brings visible benefits in real-time data collection and system flexible configuration. We believe that this kind of CAN bus based remote monitor solution is a trend suitable for the new development of power monitoring.
