The Virtual Reality (VR) technology is a very important branch in Information Technology (IT) field. It builds a highly real simulation environment by using computer algorithm, and makes the users immerse into the virtual environment. At the same time, interactive equipments such as mouse and keyboard are used to accomplish the interaction between users and the virtual environment. Compared with the traditional planform and computer animation, the immersion, interaction and real-time function of virtual reality system is unapproachable. At present, VR with its unique advantages had been applied to many fields, especially in the military, medicine, education, virtual travel, shopping, interactive entertainment, engineering technology, science and technology exploration, geographic information system etc. The paper mainly does some exploration and research on application of VR in the railway engineering geology. The paper, at first, introduces the basic conception, characteristic and technical constitution, as well as discussing the research status of VR in domestic and overseas. In addition, the virtual navigation technology based on geometry modeling is demonstrated. Then the principle and method of the three-dimension virtual scene construction are analyzed. Finally, the implementation of the engineering geology virtual scene in the Visual Studio. NET and Qt development environment is introduced. As far as the implementation of the virtual functions, the paper discusses the implementation of the section virtual scene, the mouse track-ball algorithm and the polygon reverse-clip algorithm. The preliminary research and implementation of the virtual navigation is involved in a test case.
