Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is an outcome with the deepening development of the modern Internet and is considered one of the most important technologies in the 21st century. Combining the logic information with the physical world, wireless sensor networks can collect and process real-time environmental information, and forward the results to its users. Therefore, it can be used in real-time applications widely, such as military defense, national security, environmental monitoring, traffic management, medical system, manufacturing, combating terrorism etc.To satisfy the real-time requirement of wireless sensor networks, we research on the real-time architecture and real-time transmission protocol. The major contributions of this paper are as followings:1) We designed a series of experiments in view of the real-time characteristic of wireless sensor networks, and analysis the main factors that affect real-time performance of wireless sensor networks.2) Real-time routing protocol SPEED is implemented and improved based on Micaz node hardware platform and TinyOS1.1.11 software platform. Experimental results proved that the real-time performance of the network has been improved.3) We designed and implemented a monitoring application based on perception of multi-sensor. It indicates that wireless sensor networks are application-oriented.4) We proposed a new real-time communication architecture of wireless sensor networks based on the path model, and test proves it is feasible. It can further reduce the transmission time of data packets and the possibility of congestion. Thus it can improve the real-time performance of wireless sensor networks.
