The fiber optical taper (FOT) is a new kind of optical device transmitting two-dimensional image, which is widely used in national defense, public security, aerospace, medical instrument and so on. The optical characteristic of FOT includes the parameters of transmission, magnification, bucket / pincushion distortion, resolution and chicken wire and so on. The current equipments at home and abroad can only measure certain parameter of FOT, therefore a new integrated measurement technology is needed to study.According to the above requirements, a kind of integrated measurement system for FOT characteristic parameters is proposed, which is based on single integral sphere - collimator tube - CCD camera. The working principle is to obtain incident and transmitted images of FOT respectively using the CCD camera, and then to get FOT characteristic parameters of the images through digital image processing technology.The significance of the FOT parameters measurement is firstly introduced and the existing parameter measurement methods are showed briefly. According to the system requirement, the lighting system, the light structure, the CCD camera and the lens selection are discussed in detail. Then the factors influencing FOT transmittance, resolution, magnification, chicken wire are analyzed theoretically. Finally the approaches of obtaining image, the principle and technology of image processing in measuring FOT parameters are described in detail, and the image pretreatment method involved in getting parameters are introduced , including histogram equalization, modality operation, image sharp filter and so on. The measurement of every parameter is realized by the EasyAccess image processing software toolkits.The effect of environment on measurement result is also analyzed. The measurement results are in according with the theoretical analysis basically. The experiment indicates the new system is convenience, practical, cheap cost and high accuracy, which is suitable for measuring the FOT parameters of various specifications.
