Wireless communication is the hottest wireless networking technologies. As one of the most promising technology in the next generation network, the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) system has even drawn much attention. For the sake of satisfying the requirement of the future broadband wireless access, the IEEE standardization organization has brought forward the series of IEEE 802.16 standards. These standards define the criterion of PHY layer and MAC layer of broadband wireless access air interface.With the development of wireless communication technology, all kinds of new services appear one after another. As a competitive technology of the next generation of wireless network, Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN) has taken the problem of providing QoS guarantees to different applications into consideration. But due to the limited bandwidth, it is difficult to satisfy the QoS requirements of different services simultaneously. However, bandwidth scheduling in MAC layer is one of the important parts in implementing QoS guarantee, so whether an efficient MAC bandwidth scheduling architecture can be used is very important. Aiming at the problem, a flexible QoS mechanism is provided in the MAC layer of the IEEE 802.16 Standards, and it supports multiple kinds of services for users. But the scheduling algorithm hasn't been given in the IEEE 802.16 Standards, so it's a meaningful topic to research the MAC bandwidth scheduling. Based to this, the paper mainly discusses the MAC protocol and analyzes MAC bandwidth allocation and scheduling architecture.In the paper, the background and development progress of IEEE 802.16 standards are introduced, and the characteristics, applications and network structure of 802.16 are elaborated. The 802.16d MAC protocol is discussed emphatically. Then the QoS mechanism, the supported service types and the mechanism of bandwidth allocation of 802.16 standard are analyzed. Based on a kind of already existed bandwidth allocation policy, a new kind of bandwidth allocation policy is used, and it can allocate bandwidth dynamically and fairly among all kinds of services to improve the utilization of system bandwidth, and assure the QoS characteristics of all kinds of services to complete the scheduling function left by the standards. Various generic scheduling algorithms which are used in wireless network are introduced. This thesis also analyzes the scheduling strategy of all types of service flow and applies the wireless packet scheduling algorithms which has already existed to 802.16 MAC bandwidth scheduling architecture. And then we propose a kind of efficient MAC bandwidth scheduling architecture. This MAC bandwidth scheduling architecture can provide QoS guarantee for all types of service flows.
