GPR is increasingly being used for the detection and location of buried objects such as mines and structures that are found within the upper regions of the earth's surface. Recently it has become a hot topic. GPR detects the underground objects by using EM wave method. The system always adopts UWB short impulse signal, therefore the antenna must have the characters of UWB and the smaller wave-shape distortion. The antenna is very important in Shock Pulse GPR System, and it directly affects the capability of the whole system. This dissertation is about Study on Antenna Technology of Shock Pulse Ground Penetrating Radar. It's introduced that historical development of GPR, also with Shock Pulse GPR operating principle and GPR antenna designs. The dissertation puts forward two methods of GPR antenna optimization: One is to design the dipole antenna and Archimedean antenna based on EBG structure, and to simulate them by using three-dimensional EM professional software HFSS. According to the simulation results, utilization of EBG structure has single radial characteristic and offers an antenna height reduction, including the thickness of the EBG structure; the other method is to ameliorate the conventional Archimedean spiral antenna by zigzag-arm method. The simulation result verifies the effectiveness of the antenna design, and it can meet the requests of GPR antenna design. On the basis of Archimedean spiral antenna, the improved form is studied in the thesis. On the premise of keeping or improving the performance of GPR antenna, utilization of EBG structure and zigzag-arm method can diminish the size of the antenna to achieve the purpose of miniaturization.
