Register Analysis On Journalistic Business English

In the era of information, business news reporting plays an important role in the economic field and the daily life and functions as conveying business information. Within the framework of three variables of register, namely, field, tenor, mode, the thesis analyses the stylistics of journalistic business English and explores how its linguistic features are realized. As the theoretical base of the thesis, register theory is one of the important theories in Systemic-Functional Grammar (SFG). The major representative of functional linguistic school, Halliday defines register as a variety of language distinguished according to use. The theory emphasizes language variation in relation to context, descriptions of language according to use, the functions which are realized by linguistic forms, and the effects of three major situational factors on functions. These three variables are related respectively to the ideational, interpersonal and textual components of the semantic system. With aid of contextual-language relation mode and three metafunctions of SFG, i.e. ideational, interpersonal and textual functions, the thesis, within the framework of register theory, aims to make an analysis of journalistic business English and systematically clarify its distinctive textual, syntactic, and lexical features and by virtue of the analyses on transitivity, voice pattern, mood, modality, thematic structure, together with statistics from the corpus Financial Times etc., the thesis tries to find out how the lexico-grammatical features realize its context of situation, how they are correspondingly in relation to three variables of register and to probe these variables how closely associate with the specifically social functions and contextual factors.The study aims to broaden the application scope of the theory on the basis of the thorough analysis and research on the topic with register theory of Systemic-Functional approach and to help understand the choice of business news language and the functions it realizes, which leads to a better comprehension and grasp of its characteristics as well as facilitating language study and economic activities.
