A solution, which is reliable, available, flexible and serviceable, was proposed to long distance disaster recovery based on SAN (Storage Area Network) over distances of hundreds to thousands of kilometers. In this solution, two similar separated SANs, to which the two corresponding clustering business systems were connected, were connected together over IP and SONET/SDH network. One of the two connected business system, called master system, run the business routinely and provides the services for the client. And the other system, called slave system, was controlled by the synchronization mechanism and run the business following and depend on the master system, but do not provide services. After the fatal disaster happened to master system, the slave system will soon aware of that and switch to the master mode, running independently and provides continues services for the client.In the paper, the merits of SAN to the disaster recovery system were analyzed, the fundamental system structure was proposed and a disaster recovery management platform was designed. Much of the management platform have been employed and proved reliable, available, flexible and serviceable.
