The thesis is one of the research projects of The Key Science and Technology Brainstorm Program of National"Ten Five", Wireless Access System based on Bluetooth (No. 2001BA102C); The Key Science and Technology Research Project of the Ministry of Education (No.02171), Development of the Modules and the Protocols of Share Access Based on Broadband Wireless Area Network; The High Technology Research and Development Program of Jiangsu Province (No. BG2003004), Research and Application on the Key Technologies of Mobile Ad Hoc Network; The Science and Technology Brainstorm Program of Jiangsu Province (No. BE2004008), Development of Access and Terminal Products Based on the Across-multi-network Technology. The thesis briefly introduces the history, characteristics, applications, node and network structures, common protocol stack of mobile Ad Hoc networks. It gives intensive study on the protocols of medium access control and network layers in Ad Hoc networks. By making use of the simulation tool NS, some related protocols are simulated and performances are researched and analyzed. It realizes the establishment of Ad Hoc Network based on Bluetooth and voice communications. An embedded Bluetooth PSTN gateway is designed and accomplished. This thesis is divided into six chapters as followings. In chapter 1, the contents and background of the research task and the architecture of this dissertation are introduced. In chapter 2, firstly the history, background, characteristics and applications of mobile Ad Hoc networks are introduced. Secondly its node and network structures are discussed. Finally the common protocol stack is briefly described. In chapter 3, the simulation tool NS used in this thesis is primaryily introduced, including the theories of NS, the methods and the common process of network simulation by use of NS and its component stock. In chapter 4, firstly the main issues existing in MAC protocols of Ad Hoc networks are pointed out. Several representative MAC protocols are extensively discussed; their efficiency and applicability in solving the issues are analyzed. The MAC protocols suitable to the unicast and broadcast in mobile Ad Hoc networks are designed. Finally simulations are made and performances are discussed. In chapter 5, the functions of mobile Ad Hoc network layer are introduced. The relationship between the network layer protocols and routing protocols is analyzed. The neighbor finding process and the design of different routing protocols in Ad Hoc network are discussed from the two main functions of the network layer. Finally DSDV, DSR and AODV protocols and improved AODV protocol are simulated by NS, performances are discussed and analyzed. In chapter 6, Wireless Personal Network Framework based on the Bluetooth protocol and using Bluetooth modules and related software stacks to construct Ad Hoc Networks are introduced. The design and development of the embedded Bluetooth PSTN gateway are significantly discussed.
