Digital periodicals have made great progress in the short time of about 30 years since first emerging in middle 1970s; Especially from middle 1990s, with the internet spreading all over the world quickly and becoming an important medium of public communication and personal communication, digital periodical sped its development as well. Topics such as the influence of digital periodicals on paper periodicals, the prospect of digital periodicals and development trends of digital periodicals have got more and more academic attentions gradually in these years.The digital periodical study of China began in 1992, and reached its first tide around 2000. By now, there are already more than 1,000 articles having been published on formal publications in China. However, most of these articles carried out their discussions from the angle of library science or informatics, and discussion is often confined to academic periodicals. The purpose of this thesis is to make a comprehensive and systematic analysis on the characteristics, prospect and development trends of digital periodicals as a kind of mass communication medium from the angles of communication study and publishing study and in the light of the latest developments of digital periodicals and the internet.The thesis consists of five chapters: Chapter I is titled as"Background of Study & Survey of Related Writings", and introduces the development course of digital periodicals and the general situation of digital periodical study in China after defining the conception of"digital periodical"; Chapter II is titled as"Characteristics of Digital Periodicals", and analyzes the characteristics of digital periodicals comparing with traditional paper periodicals from the aspects of displaying pattern, reading efficiency, communication performance, cost-effectiveness, etc.; Chapter III is titled as"Prospect of Digital Periodicals", and predicts that"universal digitalization of periodicals will be a general trend, but the coexistence of digital periodicals and paper periodicals won't be broken in near future"; Chapter IV is titled as"Development Trends of Digital Periodicals", and predicts 12 development trends of digital periodicals according to the nature, characteristics and latest development of digital periodicals; Chapter V is the conclusion. Chapter III and Chapter IV are focal parts of the thesis.
