With the development of Internet and real-media technology, multimedia remote education system based on Internet attracted more and more attention. In this paper, our research focused on some key themes in a multimedia remote education system. The paper introduced two modules, the real-time teaching system and the MSF VOD system. The former is in C/S mode, while the latter B/S. As to the design of the MSF VOD system, the paper introduced how to design the ActiveX control reference to the format of MSF files, which can receive the media packets from the Internet, and then group them, decompress them and play them. The control is embedded in a web page, in order that the clients need just a web browser to see the films. Different priority is added, which can be controlled by the server.Current research focuses on the design and management of buffer on the end system of a real-time media streaming system. This paper discussed the transmission protocols, the delay model, and the buffering strategy. It discussed the quantization of the buffer size on the end system, and then presented a useful method to reduce the delay on the progress between the clients submit their request and see the film. This paper also presented a dynamic adaptive buffer management method, which reduced the overflow possibility of the buffer on the client. The problem of bandwidth on the real-media server is still a bottleneck which deeply affected the quality of real-media service. Research currently focuses on proxy caching, IP multicast and P2P technology, which is widespread used. Considering the scale and the characteristic of the multimedia teaching system in the campus, this paper presented an available strategy to resolve the bandwidth problem on the real-media server. It used a"Soft-Router"technology and referenced the IP multicast technology, to place multicast proxy servers in subnets, in order to resolve the problem that the IP multicast technology can't be widely used between subnets. This strategy is applied in the real-time teaching system.
